Gundam Side Stories Translation Guide - Miscellany

MISCELLANY

The Miscellany section is, well, a dumping ground for miscellaneous content that, while important enough to justify inclusion in the guide, is not important enough to necessitate its own unique section. Want to see the FAQ part of the FAQ/Guide? This is where you'll find it. Want to see what fine people have contributed to the construction of this guide? This is where you'll find them. Want to find my email address so you can forward me your questions/comments/concerns? Again: right here.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will this game ever be localized in English and released outside of Japan?
No. No “mainline” Gundam game has been localized outside of Japan since Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire, back in 2005, so it’s unlikely. The reviews for Side Stories in Japan have also been very mixed. So—don’t hold your breath, is what I’m saying.
Is this game import-friendly?
Yes. Extremely so. It’s mostly an action game, and many of the menus are in English. You should be able to enjoy it perfectly well with zero knowledge of Japanese. That said, a bid draw of this game is the “nostalgia” factor—from its adaptations of older games—so some awareness of either Japanese or the stories being told would absolutely be beneficial. But by now means is it necessary.
Is this game similar to Gundam Senki, or Extreme Versus?
Not really. Gundam EXVS is an arcade-style arena fighter; Gundam Senki is more of an action-combat simulator. In terms of controls and mechanics, Side Stories is more similar to Senki, but is much more arcade. It emphasizes high-speed combat against large numbers of enemies—and is therefore almost like a Musou game in that difficulty arises not from individual enemy units, but from groups of enemies.
Why don’t you use X romanization for character/mobile suit Y?
The Gundam franchise is enormous, and as knowledgable as I am, I do not know everything. Romanizations can be tricky, as the perpetual Ple/Puru controversy continually demonstrates. If I recognize a name, I try and use the appropriate romanization—typically taken from officially licensed media—or choose the most conventional fan-romanization. Sometimes, however, I don’t recognize the word—and this can happen for various words written in kana that I simply don’t recognize (like guuru, which romanizes to ghoul). In these cases I simply do a direct phonetic romanization. If you notice something wrong, or even iffy, please let me know so I can correct the issue.
I’ve found a mobile suit that is not listed in your translation guide. Why isn’t it listed?
I don’t know—so email me about it and I’ll try and fix the omission!
What’s the difference between Land-type, Space-type and Land/Space-type mobile suits?
Fairly self-evident. Keep in mind that these are not mobile suit classifications, but sorting classifications. This means that a land/space MS will appear in all three tabs. Unlike Senki, you will be unable to pilot space-type MS on Earth, nor will you be able to pilot Earth-type MS in space.
Why aren't all of your translations 100% accurate?
Two reasons. First and foremost, don't expect perfection—I'm far from fluent. Second, in many cases I avoid direct translations in order to best convey information as directly and concisely as possible. For translation guides such as this, clarity is paramount.
Will you be writing a translation guide for any other Gundam or Macross games?
Yes. Absolutely. Well, probably. I will do a translation guide for any Gundam or Macross game that I am A) able to play, and B) able to enjoy. Generally speaking, I'm able to enjoy most Gundam/Macross games—they have to be pretty phenomenally bad for me to lose interest (like ACE:R). You can absolutely count on me to do a translation guide for any future Gundam/Macross titles on the Playstation 4 or Playstation Vita platforms. It is very unlikely, however, that I will ever do any guides for games on Nintendo platforms, as they are region locked and it is too much of a hassle for me to import a second set of hardware solely to play import titles.
