SIDE STORY: MISSING LINK WALKTHROUGH
The
Missing Link story takes place during the One Year War, and ultimately resolves
during the Gryps Conflict. It is presented in four campaigns—two main campaigns
for the Federation and Zeon, as well as smaller epilogue campaigns for each.
The story delves into mysteries uncovered by the Earth Federation's Pale Rider
Team and Zeon's Marchosias Team.
MISSING LINK: SLAVE WRAITH (EFSF)
The
Slave Wraiths are a unique EFSF special operations mobile suit team currently
testing a new model of mobile suit—the slave wraiths—in order to combat the
better-armed and more-experienced Zeonic mobile suit forces.

more fire, but can also deal out more damage, so prioritize the higher-level
enemies if you can.

lured the Zaku to the target area, the mission objective changes—now you are
tasked with destroying all of the enemies. Be warned, however, that after a
certain amount of time additional enemies will appear.

Zaku Cannons here. You may be tempted to use the Gundam Pixie, but it excels
at melee combat and doesn't have much HP—and therefore will take a lot of
ranged fire as it closes in on the Zaku Cannons. It may, therefore, be easier
to use the Slave Wraith.

The Marchosias Team ranks
slightly-higher than veteran level. To win the battle, you need to defeat the
Efreet. Keep in mind that the Efreet is very powerful in a melee, but lacks
strong ranged weapons—therefore keep your distance and take him out with your
ranged weapons.

The famous Odessa
campaign! There are a ton of enemies here, but most of them are rookie-level
(there are some veteran units on the map's periphery, however). Keep an eye
on the mini-map: you'll want to avoid the maelstrom of fire, so try not to
wind up in the middle of a group of enemies. Also be wary of the Dopps in the
sky—they're a nuisance, but they can stagger you and leave your suit
vulnerable to Zaku melee attacks.

interesting battle. As you might expect, the Guncannons are deadly at a
distance, but very vulnerable to melee attacks. Be careful, however, not to
get swarmed by the GM [G]'s while you close in on the Guncannons. The
Ground-type GMs are ridiculously good at melee and will slice you up like
crazy if you let them.

I strongly recommend playing
a lot with the Guncannon, and not just because it's a lot of fun. When the
second attack wave comes in, it'll be composed mostly of Goufs, with a few
Doms and Zakus tossed in. And if Ramba Ral taught us anything, it's that you
want to keep your distance when there's a Gouf about.
·
The Guncannon Type-D's
big guns are pretty unimpressive, but it's bazooka can one-hit most enemies,
and can even one-hit through a guard if the shield is light (like the Gouf's
tiny little shield).

For the first part of the
mission, your greatest foe is the environment: try not to be distracted by
how abominably ugly the jungle is. Apparently the game was partially
developed in MS-DOS. Anyway, the first stage of the mission will end once
you've destroyed a certain number of Zeon mobile suits, so you can ignore the
Efreet if you want to... but it's such a melee monster I'd strongly suggest
focusing on the Efreet until it withdraws from the field of battle. This
makes taking out the remaining Acguys and Zakus much easier.
·
The second stage of the
mission can be stressful. When the unknown mobile suit appears, it will
attack both you and the Zeon, but will prioritize the Zeon units. Ignore the
unknown MS for now and drive the Zeon from the area. Once you're alone with
the strange blue GM, it's your only enemy—and as a level 3 ace, it's a
formidable opponent. Just stay calm and focused and once you take out about
30% of it's HP the mission will end.

This mission feels a bit
more difficult than it actually is. The main thing to be concerned about are
the Gaw carriers—the more Gaws in the air, the more mobile suits you’ll have
to deal with on the ground. I recommend staying out of the water as the
low-visibility means you’ll often think you have a clear line to your target,
but your fire will actually be impacting harmlessly on the terrain.
·
If you have trouble
keeping the Big Tray’s health up, try staying close by prioritize targets. A
Gogg will do more damage to the Big Tray than a Gouf, for example. And fight
wisely—those same Goggs, for another example, are more vulnerable to melee
attacks than ranged attacks.
·
It may also be wise to
stay close the the Big Tray—don’t let the Zeon forces draw you out. A handly
alternative to flying all around the battlefield is to simply switch between
mobile suits in your team—so if you don’t have an immediate target, switch to
a different mobile suit. This is a handy tactic you’ll want to get accustomed
to as quickly as possible in order to better endure the more difficult
missions later on.

This mission has three
parts, and can be quite difficult if you don’t plan ahead—you’ll want to take
care that you take as little damage as possible, because you’ll need every
possible ounce of armor.
·
The first part of the
mission is simply to arrive at the target area in order to acquire your
team’s own mobile suits. You can avoid killing any of the GMs and just head
straight for the target area if you want, but it’s smarter to take out as
many GMs as you can before swapping out the generic MS for your team’s
standard machines—that way you’re likely to take less damage in the second
part.
·
The second part of the
mission is a simple ‘defeat all enemy units’ situation. Try to keep your
distance and minimize damage as much as possible, because the third and final
part of the mission involves fighting against an enemy Ace who can demolish
your mobile suits in only a few hits.
·
Once you’ve taken out a
sufficient quantity of enemies in the second part, the RX-80 will appear
ushering in the third and final part of the mission. The RX-80 is an
ace-level unit, and can do a lot of damage. In my opinion, the best tactic is
simply to keep your distance and use ranged attacks against him, as this
makes it easier to avoid his very-lethal attacks. Once you’ve dealt a (small)
amount of damage to the enemy forces, a new target point will arrive—that’s
right: time to retreat. So haul ass and get out of there as fast as you can.
Be careful of the RX-80, as he is very aggressive and will follow you to the
target point.

Once you arrive at the
target point, you may have to wait a while for the cutscene to play. You will
still need to be careful, as the RX-80 will follow you to the escape point,
will attack you, and if you die before the cutscene plays you will fail the
mission.

Episode 12: Trust and Betrayal

until it’s able to escape the area. You don’t have to defeat all of the
enemies prior to reaching the target point, but, again, doing so will mean
less enemies to bother you later when you’re defending the Medea.

Be mindful of the map’s
boundaries when defending the Medea. The Medea is at the very edge of the
map, so it’s impossible to move around it. Also, be aware that the Medea is
susceptible to friendly fire.

about halfway through this mission you thought, “I’m starting to miss the
Zeon.” What excellent timing, Marchosias team!

This is a very simple,
easy mission, so don’t worry overmuch. The first phase of the mission only
pits you against a small number of enemies; the second phase involve a great
deal more enemies, but you also get some very helpful reinforcements, so you
really shouldn’t have any trouble at all.

enemy attack for three minutes. They will advance in waves. Keep an eye on
the mini-map, as the HLVs cannot take much fire and if you’re not careful an
enemy will break through the front line and get to the HLVs. The HLVs won’t
last very long, so make sure to notice when that happens so you can react as
soon as possible.

Another simple mission
where all you need to do is just murder everyone. Be aware that about halfway
into the mission a cutscene will play and you’ll lose one of your playable
mobile suits. So, if you’ve been relying on having two spare mobile suits to
survive missions, you may find the latter half of this mission (and the next
mission) to be difficult. Still, so long as you’re sufficiently cautious and
aggressive, you ought not have any great difficulty with this mission.
·
The last enemy wave will
include two GM Snipers that appear at the far end of the map. Use the terrain
to your advantage and approach them from a blind angle so as to avoid fire.

Episode 18: The Shattered Tomb

Once more you only have
two mobile suits on your team, so you’ll have to play more carefully if
you’ve been relying on your squad-mates as “extra lives.” Anyway, despite
this being the final mission it’s really not all that difficult. There are
three stages to this mission, and none should cause much trouble.
·
For the first stage,
simply destroy all the enemies in front of you. There aren’t very many, but
the GMs can be rather aggressive at close range, so you may to keep your
distance and take them out with ranged weapons.
·
The second stage is much
the same as the first. You’ll be up against a small number of enemies, and
you need to defeat all of them. The catch is that this time, you have a Medea
transport to defend. So long as you keep the pressure on the enemies, the
Medea should be fine, so don’t stress out about it. You’ll also get a third
mobile suit in your team in the second half of the mission, making it that
much easier. Once the Medea arrives at its target area, the third stage of
the mission will begin.
·
For the third part of the
mission, you’re still required to defeat all of the enemies—but this time one
of those enemies is a land battleship! I strongly advise taking out all of
the battleship’s small anti-air turrets on one side, and then taking out the
enemy mobile suits while keeping to that side of the battleship—this way you
don’t have to worry about its anti-air fire. Once you’ve destroyed all of the
mobile suits, then you can finish off the Big Fork land battleship.

Congratulations! You’ve
completed the Missing Link: Pale Rider campaign. Enjoy the epilogue movie,
and then head back to the mission menu where you’ll notice that the Blue
Destiny side story campaign is now unlocked.

The
Marchosias Special Forces are the bottom the barrel: Zeon's dumping ground for
mobile suit pilots too violent, tempestuous, or injured to work properly in
standard units. Together, this group of disgraced and disgruntled misfits will
meet with folly, betrayal and conspiracy as they struggle to endure the horrors
of the One Year War.

At the Battle of Loum Char Aznable made a name
for himself by destroying five Federation battleships: now you get to do the
same. As you’d expect from the first mission, there’s really not much
challenge here. With that in mind, you may want to ignore the battleships and
focus on simply moving about in space to acclimate yourself to the controls.

If you do have trouble taking out the
warships, a classic tactic is to close in on the bridge and hack away with
melee attacks. If you’re positioned directly in front of or behind the
bridge, most of the anti-air turrets won’t be able to target you.
·
I’d also suggest using the Zaku Bazooka. Just
because, you know, damn—the effects are just so nice.

The first half pits you against several tanks and a few Guntanks. The Gunanks
are especially vulnerableto melee attacks, and the Efreet is especially
potent at close range. The latter half involves some ground-type GMs. Keep in
mind that, since they have beam sabers, they’re much more able to hold their
own at melee distances. So if you find yourself in trouble, you may want to
keep your distance.

The parenthetical in the
Japanese title is “Efreet.” This is explaining the fact that the Efreet
mobile suit is named after “Ifrit,” which is a type of genie in Arabic
folklore.

The Gundam Pixie is one
hell of an enemy, who demonstrates an unnerving tendency to fixate on the
player-controlled mobile suit. You might think to keep your distance and pelt
the Pixie with ranged attacks due to its lethal close-combat abilities, but
the Pixie is much faster than any of your mobile suits. The most effective
tactice, I’ve found, is to fight fire with fire: to close in on the Pixie
with the Efreet and just hack and chop and slice away.

A two part mission.
First, versus Guntanks; then, versus ground combat GMs and even more Guntanks.
You might think to be more concerned with the GMs than the Guntanks, but
there are a lot of Guntanks—and a half dozen Guntanks lobbing artillery
shells and missiles at you will melt through your armor very, very fast. Try
to be clever and use the terrain to your advantage, so that you’re never
surrounded or mobbed by a large number of enemies.
·
The Efreet’s long beam
axe will be your best bet to rapidly destroy enemy mobile suits. But keep in
mind that new enemy units will constantly respawn, so you don’t need to focus
on destroying enemies. The key in the second part of the mission is simply to
survive: once you’ve endured for 3 minutes, your allies will arrive to bail
you out and the mission will end.

Enemies will respawn
infinitely, so the easiest course of action here is to park yourself in a
corner of the map and just run around clobbering each group of
Guntank/Guncanons as soon as they appear. A little over 2.5 minutes in, a
cut-scene should play. After that, you’ll have to find your own escape route:
thankfully, a giant target field is plastered across your UI. So just head on
over to the target area to clear the mission.

think this is the first time I’ve ever seen a water-based mission in a Gundam
game where the more advanced, amphibious mobile suits launching a sneak
attack belong to the Federation. Cool.

If you’re impatient, you can
jump into the water and fight the GMs on the ocean floor, but I wouldn’t
recommend it. Not because the GMs have much better mobility in the water, but
because the visibility stinks. If you just wait on the platform they’ll
eventually come to you.

Another two-part mission. For the first part:
once you cleared out all of the grunts, your targets will arrive on the
battlefield: a ground-type GM, a GM Cannon and our old friend, the RX-78XX
Gundam Pixie. Luckily you don’t have to actually take down any of these
mobile suits—once you get one down to half armor, a cutscene will play
heralding the arrival of the Pale Rider--and the second half of the mission.

Now it’s time for some good old fashioned
comeuppance. Or not. You’ll notice that your priority targets have shifted to
a large group of GMs, Guntanks and tanks moving in from the opposite bank.
Sadly, you’ll have to leave the Pixie be for now and focus on mopping up the
Federation reinforcements.

If you have trouble against the massive number
of enemies, try moving to the far end of the map—this will usually spread out
the enemy forces making them easier to handle, as when they initially arrive
they are clustered together and can therefore direct much more concentrated
fire.
