Gundam Side Stories Translation Guide - Characters & Stories

CHARACTERS and STORIES

Mobile Suit Gundam: Side Stories is a compilation game that offers gamers a chance to play through the stories of older Side Story games in the Gundam franchise. The older games that have been adapted include: The Blue Destiny; Rise From the Ashes; Space, to the End of a Flash; Lost War Chronicles; Zeonic Front; and Cross Dimension 0079. In addition, Mobile Suit Gundam: Side Stories also offers a players a brand-new Side Story campaign to play through, filling in some events of the One Year War and lead-up to the Gryps Conflict. This new side story is called, very fittingly, the “Missing Link.”
I have done my best to outline the general premise of each story with minimal spoilers, but do keep in mind that some spoilers are inevitable, and read with your own risk. These are basic outlines of the story, not summaries—to experience the story properly, you’re going to have to either pay attention to the game itself, or delve into any one of a half-dozen different online resources to research everything for yourself.

THE MISSING LINK

At the height of the One Year War, the Earth Federation Space Forces found itself facing a critical shortage of skilled mobile suit pilots. To combat the much more experienced Zeonic forces, they initiated a top-secret program: the Slave Wraiths.
Led by Travis Kirkland, the Pale Rider special operations team used experimental mobile suits and guerilla tactics to launch suicidal assaults deep into Zeon-controlled territory. At the same time as the Pale Riders began their operations, Zeon organized a special unit of disaffected and disgruntled mobile suit pilots deemed unfit for normal duty. This “elite unit,” dubbed “Marchosias” frequently finds itself pitted against the Federation’s Slave Wraiths.
After Marchosias pilot Doug Schneid defects to the Federation with the experimental mobile suit, Pale Rider, both mobile suit teams—despite being on opposite sides of the war—find themselves drawn together as they unravel a conspiracy that threatens them both.

BLUE DESTINY

In the latter half of the One Year War, the Earth Federation struggled to develop and mass-produce its own mobile suits to combat the threat of Zeon. Federation pilot Yuu Kajima served as a test-pilot and squadron commander of the Experimental Corps. Marmot Team. Comprised of the Federation’s best test pilots, the Marmot Team piloted the most advanced and innovative experimental mobile suits of the One Year War. One day, in the middle of a test exercise, a mysterious blue GM attacks the Marmot Team. After his comrades are quickly defeated, more unknown units arrive on the battlefield—Zeon mobile suits. Surprisingly, the blue GM defends the Marmot Team and drives off the Zeon forces.
When the Marmot Team returns to base, they learn that the blue GM is a highly experimental mobile suit code-named “Blue Destiny Unit 1.” It is equipped with a mysterious computer system that forms a psychological link with it’s pilot—the EXAM system. Yuu Kajima is assigned the test pilot of the Blue Destiny, and ordered to test its capabilities in real combat. When the Marmot Team participates in the Federation’s offensive to retake California Base, Yuu encounters another strange blue mobile suit—another Blue Destiny—in the hands of Zeon ace pilot Nimbus Schterzen. Even as the EXAM-system drives each Blue Destiny pilot mad, Yuu and Schterzen duel each other across the blood-soaked battlefields of the One Year War slowly discovering the truth of the spirit haunting the machine and truth behind the legend of newtypes.

BLUE DESTINY NIMBUS

Nimbus Schterzen is one of the elite of the elite. A top mobile suit pilot for the Principality of Zeon, he has earned the moniker “Paladin of Zeon” for his supreme skill and preference for close-quarters combat. At the height of the One Year War, Nimbus is assigned a new experimental mobile suit—the MS-08TX Efreet—equipped with a mysterious computer program called EXAM, which forms a psychological link with the pilot. With this powerful new mobile suit, Nimbus is assigned a special mission: to hunt down and eliminate the Zeon defector Chulst Moses.
As Nimbus searches for Moses, he learns the truth behind the legend of newtypes the fear it could inspire in normal humans. Moses drove himself insane with paranoia, and convinced himself that newtypes would eventually overcome and enslave—or eradicate—the human race. He defected to the Federation to supply them with technology that would allow them to defeat the spacenoids’ newtypes utterly—the very same technology embedded within Nimbus’ Efreet. But there is something else inside the EXAM system, a mysterious being Moses could not predict, and as Nimbus uncovers its truth he will discover the power that will shape the Universal Century.

RISE FROM THE ASHES

Universal Century 0079: humankind is embroiled in the most destructive war in its history. After struggling to establish its independence from the hegemonic Earth Federation for years, the Republic of Zeon is reformed into the Principality of Zeon—a dictatorship led by the fascist Zabi family. The Principality of Zeon declares its independence and, offering only a three second warning before their first attack, declare war with the same breath. Zeon’s first move is Operation British: after using poison gas to eradicate the population of a Federation Side 2 colony, Zeon forces attempt to use the colony like an enormous missile to obliterate the Earth Federation’s military headquarters, Jaburo, from orbit. Operation British fails—and in its failure wreaks greater agonies than it would have in its success. A fragment of the colony falls into the Earth’s atmosphere and strikes the city of Sydney, Australia—absolutely obliterating hundreds of thousands of souls in a single flash. Forced now to prepare for a long, drawn-out conflict with the Federation, the Principality of Zeon launches a blitzkrieg invasion—utilizing their superior mobile suit technology to combat the Federation on every front.
At the scarred ground where the city of Sydney once stood, at the site of the fallen colony, the Federation’s newly-commissioned White Dingo mobile suit team must rise up from the ashes and confront the Zeon invaders to ensure that no other such tragedy ever occurs.

ZEONIC FRONT

Universal Century 0079: humanity is at war. To secure their independence from the hegemonic Earth Federation, the Principality of Zeon initiates a planet-wide invasion of the earth, attacking the Federation Forces on all fronts. A veteran mobile suit pilot who was wounded during the first battles between Zeon and the Federation—the so-called “One Week War,” Garret Schmitzer is assigned command of the Midnight Fenrir MS team. Created by vice admiral Kycilia Zabi, the Midnight Fenrir is an elite unit under her personal command.
Throughout the course of the war the Midnight Fenrir serves pivotal role in the invasion, and is ultimately called upon to defend the last Zeonic front at the Battle of Odessa. As commander of the Midnight Fenrir team, Schmitzer finally encounters his enemy counterpart: EFSF Lt. Agar—the man who wounded him during the One Week War. Pilot of the prototype mobile suit, the Gundam Mudrock, Agar proves a formidable opponent. But Agar’s is not the only Gundam the Midnight Fenrir will face….

LOST WAR CHRONICLES: EFSF

An aberration of the One Year War: Matt Healy, an EFSF mobile suit pilot, has vowed never to take a human life, no matter the circumstances. At the height of humanity’s greatest conflict, with more than half the total population obliterated, he struggles to reconcile his beliefs with his role as commander of the Earth Federation’s VSMS Special Forces 3rd Mobile Suit Squadron. Despite the conflicts within the team caused by his determination to violate mission orders in order to prevent loss-of-life, Healy leads his team to victory—and more importantly, survival—in some of the bloodiest battles of the war. At both Odessa and Jaburo, Healy fights to protect all of the lives who will build the world that must surely exist when the blood and battle of the One Year War finally ends.

LOST WAR CHRONICLES: ZEON

A half-century has passed since mankind began moving its burgeoning population to outer space. Gigantic colonies orbiting the Earth have become mankind’s second home, where people are born, raised and die. Ken Bederstadt was born in a space colony, and in space he found love and raised a family of his own. But at the dawn of the year 0079, his quiet peace is torn asunder with the opening of hostilities between his home—the independent colonies of Side 3, now under the totalitarian control of the Zabi family—and the hegemonic Earth Federation.
Forced into military service, Bederstadt joins the Principality of Zeon’s “foreign legion” – and descends to the Earth’s surface alongside the full might of Zeon’s war machine. Once on Earth, he fights with a determined recklessness—which earns him the moniker, “Shinigami,” the God of Death—so that he can survive the war and return home to his daughter on Side 3.

SPACE, TO THE END OF A FLASH

As the Earth Federation drives the Zeonic invaders from the surface of the Earth, the front line of the One Year war moves into space. In preparation for the invasion of the Zeon space fortress of Solomon, the EFSF assigns the state-of-the-art Pegasus-class mobile suit carrier, the Thoroughbred, behind enemy lines to disrupt the supply routes between Solomon and the Moon.   On board the Thoroughbred are two ace mobile suit pilots: Luce Kassel and Ford Romfellow, who are entrusted with two of the EFSF’s most valuable prototype mobile suits. Together, with the power of the Gundam Unit 4 and Gundam Unit 5, Kassel and Romfellow will fight desperately to defend the Thoroughbred from the menace of Zeon and to pave the way for Operation Star One—the Battle for Solomon that will determine the course of the One Year War.

CROSS DIMENSION 0079

In the middle of the chaos of the One Year War, Henry Boone, commander of Zeon’s Wolf Gar mobile suit team has a fateful encounter with a Gundam. Stranded in the Gobi desert and desperate for supplies, Boone orders his team to assault the Federation’s Albatross Base—where they discover the RX-78XX Gundam Pixie. With the prototype land-combat mobile suit, the MS-08TX Efreet, Boone attempts to seize the Gundam, but fails.
In spite of his failure, Boone realized that the Pixie was far superior to Zeon’s state-of-the-art Efreet, and became even more determined to capture it—both to deny the Federation a powerful Gundam, and to bolster Zeon’s flagging mobile suit research. Over the course of several weeks, Boone finds himself locked in a fateful conflict with Bork Cry, pilot of the Pixie, and Albatross Base’s commander, Nacht Gaddish. Who will survive?
