Autumn 2010 /m/ Mecha Anime Survey Results

The survey concluded last week, but it took me a while to calculate all of the results. I apologize for the delay, but this survey ended up being much, much larger (and therefore more informative/reliable) than the last. It also covers a great deal more shows.

A few quick conclusions:
  • The highest rated show is... Legend of Galactic Heroes.
  • The best show you haven't seen is... VOTOMs.
  • The best show no one has seen is... Fang of the Sun: Dougram.
  • The worst show everyone has seen is... Gundam Seed.
  • The worst show no one has seen is... Dancouga Nova.

I'll post the individual list of rankings below (both ranked by highest total rating and by viewership percentages). With 420 participants, this survey covers ~50% or more of /m/'s total population, and can therefore be considered a very reliable measure of the community's tastes. Full documentation of the survey can be found here.

It's perfectly natural to examine these results and think to yourself, "I'm not sure I agree with that." For each individual, there may be a margin of error compared to his or her own personal opinions that I would quantify at about ~10%.

If anything you see here makes you angry, or you find yourself disagreeing with an inordinate number of things... well, first I would double-check that you're reading the results correctly. If you are still inconsolable... congratulation: you are a statistical outlier.

  1. Wow, I never knew Victory was so well liked. I enjoyed it too myself, but I never felt that /m/ thought of it so well, heh.

  2. Personally I don't get how Turn A (which I found to be a real bad Gundam show) can seem to surpass 0079, all the other UC classics, Wing Seed and yet still have a less viewers than said series, surely people watch because they like a show and find it enticing, so surely the shows with the higher ratings should make for the more popular shows.

  3. Not necessarily. More people tend to watch shows w/ official translations, shows that aired on Television in their native language, etc., than shows only available in Japanese.

The number of people who have watched a thing has no bearing on the quality of a thing. There's great stuff out there no one watches, and terrible stuff everyone watches. Hell, this survey has examples of both--GSD and Dougram.

  4. More people liked Patlabor TV than Mobile Suit Gundam or Zeta Gundam? Patlabor TV was dreck, except for parts of the Griffon arc. Too much giant monster combat for a show that's supposed to be real robot.

  5. Maybe they liked it for the characters or slice-of-life bits? I don't remember many giant monsters.

But I do remember a lot of disgruntled construction workers.

  7. I LIKE TO WRITE IN ALL CAPS SO THAT PEOPLE KNOW I HAVE A VERY SERIOUS OPINION THAT I TAKE VERY SERIOUSLY, AND THAT I AM VERY, VERY ENTHUSIASTIC WITH MY SHARING OF THAT SERIOUS OPINION, BECAUSE IT IS DIRELY SERIOUS THAT EVERYONE SEE MY OPINION BECAUSE IT IS LIFE-ALTERING.

  8. Why haven't you done surveys for 2011 or 2012? It's nearly 2013.

    1. And now it is 2013!

      As for "Why?"
Mostly because I haven't really gone to 4chan since 2010. And my life is the better for it.

I'm thinking I will go back this year to run another poll, maybe go to a few other places to try and get greater participation. I dunno. I'm kind of out of the forum scene. MAHQ? GameFAQs? The only reason I bothered with 4chan at all was because the other anime discussion boards were so much worse, so maybe I'd be better off just sticking with the chans.
